New Hanover County Schools discuss data security costs and local collaboration efforts

Concerns over data security and budget implications dominated the New Hanover County Schools Board of Education meeting on June 3, 2025. Dr. Merrick stated, “If we bring it home and there is a breach, that liability would be on us,” highlighting the importance of weighing the financial implications against the security of student data. Board member Miss Barnhart reassured the public that the board is actively pursuing conversations with the North Carolina Department of Information Technology to enhance data security protocols. She noted, “We are actively pursuing ways to ensure the safety of data... nobody wants to see this happen again,” referencing past incidents that have raised alarms about data safety.
