The Town of Stratford's recent council meeting highlighted several community-focused initiatives aimed at improving public health and providing essential services to residents.
One of the key announcements was the Health Department's final "Know Your Numbers" event, scheduled for Wednesday, March 13, at the YMCA from 9 AM to 11:30 AM. This event will offer free screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, and waist circumference, along with complimentary COVID test kits and remaining radon test kits. This initiative underscores the town's commitment to promoting health awareness among its residents.
Additionally, the Health Department's collaboration with senior services to increase vaccination rates against COVID-19 and flu is nearing completion. With support from the National Council on Aging, over 800 vaccines have been administered through 27 clinics, benefiting 21 homebound residents. The program also provided assistance to more than 57 residents with transportation and scheduling for vaccine appointments, demonstrating a proactive approach to community health.
In other community service updates, the Baldwin Center is offering limited appointments for income tax preparation through AARP and the IRS VITA program. This service is crucial for residents seeking assistance with their tax filings.
Moreover, representatives from United Illuminating, Southern Connecticut Gas Operation Fuel, and Alliance for Community Empowerment recently assisted over 85 individuals at the Baldwin Center with heating and utility assistance, highlighting the town's efforts to support residents in need.
Looking ahead, community volunteers, led by the Brown family, are organizing an Easter dinner at the Baldwin Center at noon, with reservations required. This event aims to foster community spirit and connection during the holiday season.
Lastly, on March 13, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM, Community Services will host free suicide prevention training at the Birds Eye Municipal Complex. This training will equip participants with the skills to recognize warning signs of suicide and provide support to those in need.
These initiatives reflect the Town of Stratford's ongoing commitment to enhancing the well-being of its residents through health services, community support, and educational opportunities.
