Dade City plans regional hurricane shelter to aid local and neighboring residents

A new hurricane shelter is set to be developed in Dade City, Pasco County, aimed at providing a safe haven for residents during severe storms. The proposal emerged during a recent meeting of the Pasco Board of County Commissioners, highlighting the urgent need for a facility that can accommodate the growing population and serve as a regional emergency resource.

Commissioners emphasized that the current shelters are inadequate, particularly in light of recent hurricanes that have caused significant damage along the coast. The proposed shelter will not only cater to Dade City but also extend its services to neighboring counties, including Pinellas and Hillsborough, ensuring that those displaced by storms have a safe place to go.

The new facility will be designed to withstand Category 5 storms and will also house the local Veterans Affairs office, replacing an outdated building from the 1950s.
