Northbrook plans zoning code overhaul to enhance community benefits and sustainability efforts

Northbrook's Village Board of Trustees has taken significant steps towards modernizing its zoning code and promoting sustainability during a special meeting held on June 3, 2025. The board approved a streamlined one-step review process for development projects, allowing developers to request deviations from existing zoning standards in exchange for community benefits. In addition to the new review process, the board discussed the removal of outdated provisions from the zoning code. Notably, the requirement to publish the zoning map annually on March 30 has been eliminated. The meeting also addressed the cumbersome protest provision that could trigger a supermajority vote if a written protest was filed against a zoning application. This provision, which has rarely been successfully invoked, will be removed to simplify the process for residents wishing to voice their concerns.
