Oneonta council discusses city property sales and homeless support initiatives

The Oneonta Common Council made significant strides in addressing community needs during their recent meeting on March 4, 2025. A key decision was made regarding the sale of city property, allowing the council to accept proposals for selling parcels, provided they secure a supermajority of six votes in favor. This flexibility in property management is expected to facilitate future developments, although parks and properties prohibited by state law remain off-limits for sale.

In addition to property discussions, council members highlighted the importance of community engagement in upcoming projects. A public presentation regarding the new roundabout project is scheduled for April 15, where residents will have the opportunity to learn more and ask questions. Council member Elaine praised the efforts of local organizations addressing homelessness and housing issues, emphasizing the collaborative work being done by groups such as the Greater Oneonta Homeless Coalition and the United Way of Midrural New York. She acknowledged the pressing need for affordable housing and transitional services, which have been prioritized in discussions with state representatives.

To further support these initiatives, a public information session on homelessness is set for March 6, where seven agencies will present their work and challenges, inviting community participation and support. This event aims to foster awareness and collaboration among residents and service providers.
