During the Pleasanton City Council meeting on November 7, 2024, two police officers were honored for their heroic actions in saving a life during a critical incident in August. Officer Viva Valdez and Officer Roman Cuevas were recognized for their quick response to a report of a man who had stabbed himself.
On the night of August 23, Officer Cuevas arrived at the scene to find the residence locked. With the help of the property manager, he gained access but discovered the individual was not inside. Continuing his search, he found the man lying in a pool of blood at an abandoned car wash. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Officer Cuevas applied pressure to the man's chest wound while attempting to access his emergency medical kit.
Officer Valdez arrived shortly after and assisted in locating a chest seal bandage, which they used to stabilize the man's condition. Their prompt actions were crucial, as the individual, who had been nonresponsive, began to breathe again. Emergency medical services transported him to University Hospital in San Antonio, where he was in critical condition.
The council emphasized the importance of the officers' dedication and training, noting that had Officer Cuevas not continued his search, the outcome could have been tragic. This incident highlights the commitment of Pleasanton’s police force to go above and beyond in their duties, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. The recognition of Officers Valdez and Cuevas serves as a reminder of the vital role law enforcement plays in emergency situations.
