Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) has taken a significant step forward in adapting to the evolving landscape of education by approving a new policy on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in academic settings. During the Academic Affairs, Student Life, & Athletics Committee meeting on May 20, 2025, the committee unanimously endorsed Policy 3.23, which outlines guidelines for students and faculty regarding AI tools in coursework.
Brian Hinote, who presented the policy, emphasized the importance of establishing clear expectations for both students and faculty. The policy allows students to use AI tools with instructor approval, ensuring that they do not rely on these technologies to bypass essential learning outcomes. Faculty members are tasked with setting explicit guidelines in their syllabi, promoting responsible use of AI while adhering to professional standards.
Hinote noted that this policy is a response to Tennessee Public Chapter 550, which mandates that all higher education institutions in the state implement AI usage guidelines by July 25. The committee recognized the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, aiming to create a framework that supports educational integrity while embracing technological advancements.
In addition to the AI policy, the meeting also touched on the need for ongoing education about AI's implications. Trustee DeLay suggested organizing a session for board members to better understand AI's practical applications in daily life and its integration into student experiences.
The committee's approval of Policy 3.23 marks a proactive approach to incorporating AI into MTSU's academic framework, setting a precedent for responsible usage that aligns with the university's educational mission. As the policy is implemented, updates will be made to both the student and faculty handbooks to ensure clarity and accessibility of information regarding AI usage in the classroom.
