Collierville Council advances park development and zoning cleanup initiatives

The Collierville Planning Commission meeting held on June 5, 2025, addressed several key agenda items focused on development and zoning updates in the community.

The meeting began with discussions on Lockwood spaces 5 and 6, which are expected to be included in the consent agenda for approval. The commission also reviewed a significant park plan development that aims to incorporate land to the north, which has been mentioned in local media as a potential future school site. This area is also being developed for the Collierville First Methodist Church, which has recently submitted an application to move forward with construction.

A highlight of the meeting was the introduction of a new development activity map, set to launch soon. The commission plans to demonstrate this updated tool, which will include additional content and updates on the comprehensive plan. An RFP for the comprehensive plan is anticipated to be released shortly, and new staff members will be introduced at the next meeting.

Additionally, the commission discussed a special project for the upcoming fiscal year, starting July 1. This project will focus on a cleanup ordinance for the zoning regulations, addressing various topics that have emerged over time. Key issues include the regulation of electric vehicle charging stations, solar panel installations, and the need to revise parking requirements, particularly in light of changing business models observed at local fast-food establishments.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BMA) is also working on revising alcohol regulations, which may affect some uses within the town. Furthermore, recent changes in state legislation regarding the Board of Zoning Appeals will necessitate updates to local codes to ensure compliance.

The commission encouraged members to share any questions or additional topics for consideration regarding the cleanup ordinance, emphasizing a collaborative approach to addressing community needs. The overall aim is to refine the zoning ordinance progressively, leading to a comprehensive overhaul following the completion of the comprehensive planning effort.
