Cerritos considers earlier hours for new pickleball courts at Liberty Park

Cerritos is set to enhance its recreational offerings with the recent approval of additional pickleball courts, a move that reflects the growing popularity of the sport in the community. During the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on June 5, 2025, Teddy Lloyd, a local advocate for pickleball, urged the city to adjust the hours of operation for the newly opened courts at Liberty Park, which currently operate from 10 AM to 8 PM. Lloyd emphasized that many players, particularly seniors, prefer to play in the cooler morning hours, suggesting an earlier opening time of 7 AM or even 6:30 AM.

The commission acknowledged Lloyd's concerns, noting that the current hours were set as a trial basis to ensure the security of the movable nets used for the dual-purpose courts. The city plans to convert one tennis court at Cerritos Park East into additional pickleball courts, further expanding access to the sport.

In addition to the hours of operation, Lloyd raised issues regarding the lighting at the courts, suggesting that adjustments could improve visibility without the need for costly new installations. The commission expressed willingness to explore these suggestions and ensure that community feedback is taken into account.
