Samford University seeks height variances for new residential buildings in Bulldog District

Samford University is taking significant steps to address its growing on-campus housing needs, as highlighted during the Homewood Board of Zoning Adjustments meeting on June 5, 2025. The university's associate vice president for construction operations and planning presented a proposal for three new residential buildings in the Bulldog District, aimed at meeting a 75% undergraduate occupancy requirement that has proven challenging to fulfill.

The proposed buildings, West Village and Stadium Village, are designed to enhance the campus's residential atmosphere, which university officials emphasize is crucial for maintaining a vibrant, walkable community. The university has experienced consistent enrollment growth over the past 15 years, necessitating additional housing options to accommodate students who prefer living on campus rather than commuting.

The variance requests include increasing the height of the buildings to 48.5 feet for the West Village and 52.5 feet for the Stadium Village.
