State Fire Marshal Cassie Peters outlines improvements following 2023 audit findings

The Joint Legislative Audit Committee of the Arizona Legislature convened on June 6, 2025, to address significant issues concerning the State Fire Marshal's office. The meeting focused on the findings from the recent audit and the development of a comprehensive plan to improve the office's operations.

State Fire Marshal Cassie Peters presented a draft plan aimed at achieving compliance with statutory requirements and addressing the recommendations outlined in the Arizona Auditor General's audit. Peters highlighted the challenges faced by the office, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which hindered inspection initiatives. She emphasized the importance of the audit findings and expressed a commitment to implementing the recommended changes.

Key measures discussed included the establishment of a complete inventory of buildings under the State Fire Marshal's jurisdiction. Peters reported that the office successfully identified 5,741 structures, including public, private, and charter schools, as well as county-owned buildings. Additionally, the office is working to compile a current inventory of state-owned buildings, which currently includes 292 structures.

The committee also addressed the need for risk classification of buildings, particularly schools, which are designated as high-risk and require annual fire safety inspections. Peters acknowledged that not all buildings have been classified yet but assured the committee that efforts are underway to complete this task.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to further collaboration with the Auditor General's office to refine the plan and ensure effective implementation of the audit recommendations. The ongoing improvements within the State Fire Marshal's office are seen as crucial for enhancing fire safety standards across Arizona.
