Rippon Middle and Garfield High students win Virginia 2 50 expressions of freedom contest

The Prince William County School Board meeting held on June 4, 2025, showcased significant achievements by local students in the Expressions of Freedom contest, a collaborative initiative by the Virginia Department of Education and VA 250. This competition aimed to engage students in reflecting on the meaning of freedom through various forms of expression, including artwork, essays, and videos, as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

During the meeting, notable recognition was given to two students: Aqsa Henak from Rippon Middle School and Connor Sigmund from Garfield High School. Both students were honored for their exceptional submissions, which were selected to be placed in a time capsule at the base of the restored statue of George Washington in Trafalgar Square, London. This time capsule is set to be opened on July 4, 2276, coinciding with America's 500th birthday.

Aqsa Henak expressed her gratitude to her teacher, Carmela Bertrand, for encouraging her participation in the contest. Her submission, titled "The Manifestation of Freedom," combined a poem and a painting that explored the complexities of freedom and its costs. She emphasized the importance of personal experience in understanding freedom, highlighting how her everyday interactions inspired her artwork.

Connor Sigmund, representing Garfield High School, shared his appreciation for the recognition and reflected on the collaborative spirit of his school community. His essay, "The Foundation of Freedom," was celebrated as the top entry among Virginia high schools. Sigmund articulated the significance of community support in achieving individual success, echoing the sentiment that the strength of the pack is rooted in collective encouragement.
