Synergen Energy proposes shared solar project on former SunBright lithium tailing site

Scott County, Virginia, is moving forward with plans for a new solar energy initiative following a recent Board of Supervisors meeting. The board discussed a proposal from Synergen Energy to install a small-scale solar farm on a former lithium tailing site, located outside of Duffield. This project aims to utilize approximately 75 acres of the 120-acre property, which is currently under contract for purchase.

The proposed solar farm will consist of three separate facilities, each generating 4.8 megawatts of power. The project is part of a shared solar program set to launch in Appalachian Power's service territory, which will allow local residents to benefit directly from the energy produced. Synergen Energy has a strong track record in community solar projects, having successfully developed similar initiatives on brownfield sites in Maryland and Maine.

During the meeting, representatives from Synergen Energy provided details about the project’s design and construction plans. They emphasized that the solar panels will be installed using a balanced racking system that does not penetrate the ground, ensuring the integrity of the existing cap on the site. This method is crucial for maintaining environmental safety while repurposing the land for renewable energy.

The timeline for construction is still being finalized, with expectations to begin by the end of this year or early next year, depending on regulatory approvals and weather conditions. The board also discussed the importance of ongoing monitoring of the site, which has been under observation since its previous use, to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

In addition to the solar project, the board addressed other community concerns and initiatives, but the solar farm proposal stood out as a significant step towards sustainable energy development in Scott County. As the project progresses, it is expected to provide both environmental benefits and economic opportunities for local residents.
