Asheville reopens parks and greenways with phased approach to ensure safety

Community members are welcomed back to Asheville's parks and greenways as the city embarks on a phased reopening plan following extensive recovery efforts. During a recent Buncombe County Community Briefing, officials emphasized the importance of reconnecting with nature and each other after significant infrastructure damage.

The City of Asheville is committed to ensuring safety and enjoyment for all visitors, with a careful approach to reopening based on federal inspections and safety assessments. Fully open public spaces now include Amboy Riverfront Park, Craven Street Trailhead Park, Craven Street Ridge Boating Access Area, Jean Webb Park, and Wilma Dikeman Greenway. Partially open areas, such as the East Side of Carrier Park, offer limited access to picnic shelters and educational wetlands, while the west side remains closed, except for a section of the French Broad River Greenway.

While the French Broad River Greenway has reopened in parts, several areas, including French Broad River Park and Richmond Hill Park, remain closed. Officials urge visitors to exercise caution and adhere to posted signage and instructions from Asheville Parks and Recreation staff.

As the city continues to rebuild, officials expressed gratitude to the community for their patience and support, reaffirming their commitment to "building back better."
