Virginia Cooperative Extension programs expand with new clubs and 92 campers this summer

The Wythe County Board of Supervisors meeting on May 27, 2025, featured significant updates from the Virginia Cooperative Extension and discussions regarding property reassessment processes in the county.

During the meeting, representatives from the Virginia Cooperative Extension provided a programming update. They highlighted the successful integration of new 4-H agent Hailey into local elementary schools, where she is conducting hands-on learning activities that support Standards of Learning (SOLs). Hailey has also initiated two new clubs: a teen club for ages 13 to 18 and a homeschool club for ages 5 to 18. The extension office reported a strong turnout for their upcoming junior 4-H camp, with 92 campers and 14 counselors registered, marking an increase that necessitated a waitlist this year.

Additionally, Ethan, the agriculture and natural resources agent, reported on two programs that reached 52 participants and conducted 45 client visits, despite being on paternity leave after the birth of his second child. The extension office also noted that a total of 38 unique human consumer science programs have impacted 588 individuals, covering topics such as food safety and chronic condition management.

The meeting also addressed the county's property reassessment process. A representative discussed the transition to a new software provider, Vision, which has merged with two appraisal companies in Virginia. Concerns were raised about past experiences with previous contractors who did not engage with citizens directly, leading to dissatisfaction among taxpayers. The board emphasized the importance of ensuring that residents have opportunities for in-person discussions regarding property valuations.
