UIC board approves Metro U Pass Plus extension benefiting thousands of students

The University of Illinois Board of Trustees made significant strides in student advocacy during their meeting on May 22, 2025, by approving a five-year extension of the Metro U Pass Plus program. This initiative, which offers discounted transportation rates to students, marks a historic first for any institution in Chicago and has already proven successful at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Trustee Basta highlighted that over 4,300 students enrolled in the program during its first semester, with numbers rising to 4,500 in the following semester. In addition to the transportation fee discussion, the board approved several key budget items, including the preliminary operating budget for fiscal year 2026 and project budgets for various initiatives such as the nurse anesthesia program simulation lab and the Innovation Center Expansion in Chicago.
