Town Council approves $1M bid for above ground fuel facilities from Rhode Island Hydraulics

During the East Greenwich Town Council meeting on June 9, 2025, a significant decision was made regarding the town's infrastructure, specifically concerning the replacement of aging fuel storage facilities. The council ratified a bid awarded to Rhode Island Hydraulics Company for $1,006,150 to supply and install new above-ground fueling facilities. This move comes as the town's current underground storage tanks, located at the highway garage and wastewater treatment facility, have surpassed their recommended lifespan of over 20 years.

The project, which is funded by the American Rescue Plan, aims to enhance safety and compliance with current regulations. Director of Public Works, Fred Gomes, highlighted that the new above-ground tanks will be installed at the highway facility, allowing for a seamless transition as the old tanks are removed. This approach ensures that operations can continue without interruption.

In addition to the primary project, two alternate components were included: a canopy to cover the tanks and a dispenser for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), which is necessary for meeting environmental standards. The total cost of the project, including these alternates, amounts to $503,150.

The decision to replace the tanks is not only a matter of compliance but also reflects the town's commitment to maintaining safe and efficient public works facilities. As the council moves forward with this project, residents can expect improved infrastructure that aligns with modern safety standards. The next steps will involve the execution of the project and the eventual removal of the outdated underground tanks, marking a significant upgrade in the town's fuel storage capabilities.
