Missoula opens year-round facility for hazardous waste disposal services

The City of Missoula held a meeting on June 9, 2025, to discuss the ongoing Home Resource Zero Waste Lunch & Learn Series, focusing specifically on household chemical disposal. The meeting highlighted the year-round facility that opened last July, which operates on an appointment-based system for residents of Missoula and Missoula County.

The facility aims to provide a more accessible option for residents to dispose of hazardous household chemicals, moving away from the traditional once-a-year drop-off events. This change allows for continuous support and safer disposal practices throughout the year.

During the meeting, officials outlined the types of products accepted at the facility. These include flammable materials, chlorinated solvents, toxic substances, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, acids, bases, corrosives, oxidizers, and mercury-containing products such as thermometers and thermostats. Additionally, the facility accepts PCB ballast, which are components from older fluorescent lighting tubes.

The initiative reflects the city's commitment to promoting environmental safety and responsible waste management. By providing a dedicated space for hazardous waste disposal, Missoula aims to protect public health and the environment while educating residents on the importance of proper chemical disposal.
