McAllen ISD plans to utilize new funding for salaries and facilities upgrades

McAllen ISD is poised to make significant financial adjustments following a recent board workshop, where discussions centered on optimizing funding sources to address rising costs and enhance staff compensation. A key highlight was the projected $12 million increase in funding for the district, with approximately $5 million available for unrestricted use after accounting for dedicated allocations, including teacher raises.

The board explored creative strategies to manage a projected $2 million increase in health insurance costs. By reallocating funds designated for special education and other areas, the district aims to relieve pressure on its general fund. "That’s where the creativity is gonna come in," noted a board member, emphasizing the potential to balance the budget effectively.

Additionally, the introduction of a new support staff retention allotment, estimated at $800,000, is expected to help offset $3 million in salary increases for auxiliary staff, including custodians. However, clarity is still needed on the definition of "support staff," particularly regarding instructional coaches, as the state has yet to finalize guidelines.

The meeting also addressed modifications to existing allotments, including a projected gain of nearly $900,000 from a basic allotment increase and additional funds from expanded definitions in special education and dyslexia support. Notably, the school safety allotment is set to increase by $747,000, which could be utilized for police salaries, enhancing security measures across campuses.

Looking ahead, the district is actively engaging in a facilities needs assessment, with plans for community engagement scheduled for the week of July 21. This initiative aims to gather public feedback on potential bond planning, which could significantly impact the district's operational budget and facility upgrades.
