Navasota schedules summer events including Juneteenth concert and Freedom Festival parade

The City Council of Navasota, Texas, convened on June 11, 2025, to discuss a variety of community events and updates aimed at enhancing local engagement and services. The meeting began with announcements of upcoming events, including a Chamber of Commerce breakfast on June 14, the Farmers Market from 9 AM to 1 PM on the same day, and the Railroad Street Art Market from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Marketing and Communications Director Taylor Hughes provided an update on the "Sounds of Navasota" concert series, highlighting the next event scheduled for June 21, which will also celebrate Juneteenth. The concert will feature Zydeco Joe and the H Town Players at City Hall, starting at 7:30 PM, and will include family-friendly activities such as water slides and face painting. Following this, the annual Freedom Festival will take place on July 4, featuring a parade at 6 PM, live music, and fireworks at 9 PM.

The council also discussed the reopening of the city pool, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony set for June 12 at 2:30 PM. The pool will offer free entries for the first 100 attendees, thanks to local sponsorship. Additionally, lap swim sessions will commence on June 12, running Tuesday through Friday mornings.

Updates from the library included the launch of a summer reading program with 159 children registered, and a book fair in collaboration with Scholastic, running through June 16. The library will also host "Pets with a Mission," a program aimed at promoting child literacy through interaction with reading assistance dogs.

Parks and Recreation updates revealed ongoing improvements to Cleveland Park, including new basketball equipment and maintenance efforts to enhance the facility's appeal. Various summer camps and workshops for children are scheduled, including a cheer workshop and creative performers workshop.

The meeting concluded with a reminder for residents to stay informed about community activities through the city’s website and social media channels. The council emphasized the importance of community involvement and the availability of resources for residents to engage with local programs.
