Saint Cecilia students collect over 1,500 socks for Saint Anthony's Foundation drive

In a recent San Francisco County meeting, student organizers from Saint Cecilia's Church and Schools were honored for their successful donation drive benefiting Saint Anthony's Foundation. This initiative, led by a group of junior high students, marked the school's first-ever student-run community service project, showcasing their commitment to social responsibility and community engagement.

The donation drive, which took place throughout March, initially aimed to collect socks for the unhoused. However, after collaborating with Saint Anthony's Foundation, the students expanded their efforts to include shoes and sweatpants, responding to the specific needs identified by the organization. Their proactive approach included making announcements, utilizing community newsletters, and presenting their cause during school events, which significantly raised awareness and encouraged participation.

The results were impressive: the students collected 1,521 pairs of socks, 49 pairs of sweatpants, and 47 pairs of shoes, along with additional items such as sweatshirts, bags, masks, gloves, and food. These donations were subsequently delivered to Saint Anthony's Foundation, which has been a vital resource in the Tenderloin district for 75 years, providing essential services to those facing poverty, addiction, and mental health challenges.

During the meeting, students expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to lead this project, emphasizing the importance of community service in fostering leadership skills and personal growth. Their adviser, Jean Roland, was also recognized for her support throughout the initiative.

The meeting underscored the significance of youth involvement in community service, highlighting how such initiatives can inspire others to contribute positively to society. As the students concluded their presentation, they expressed hope that their efforts would motivate more young leaders to engage in service, reinforcing the message that collective action can bring about meaningful change in the community.
