Charles River Center unveils innovative affordable housing project in Needham

In a recent meeting held at Needham Town Hall, the Town Financed Community Housing Oversight Committee received an exciting update on a new housing project aimed at supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Philip Green, a project manager from the planning office for Urban Affairs, introduced the initiative, which is a collaboration with the Charles River Center. This project is set to transform a site previously owned by the U.S. Army into a vibrant community space.

The ambitious plan includes the construction of 86 affordable housing units, designed to accommodate individuals earning between 30% to 80% of the area median income. Notably, half of these units will be reserved for clients and staff of the Charles River Center, ensuring that those who need it most have access to suitable housing. The project will also feature a community center, open to all residents, which will host various programs such as cooking classes and financial literacy workshops.

Green emphasized the importance of creating a sense of community within the development. The design includes both three-story and single-story buildings, with communal spaces intended to encourage interaction among residents. Each unit will be equipped with its own kitchen and bathroom, while shared areas will foster camaraderie and social engagement.

The project is not only focused on housing but also on sustainability. It aims to meet rigorous energy efficiency standards, incorporating solar panels and other renewable energy sources. The developers are committed to preserving the natural beauty of the site, which is surrounded by walking trails and green spaces, enhancing the overall living experience for future residents.

As the project moves forward, the committee expressed optimism about its potential impact on the community, particularly in maintaining the town's subsidized housing inventory. With the groundwork laid and plans in motion, Needham is poised to welcome a new chapter in inclusive and sustainable living.
