Camden County Library advocates seek fair wages and funding amid staffing crisis

The Camden County Board of Commissioners held a meeting on May 15, 2025, where several key issues were discussed, including budgetary resolutions and concerns regarding library funding and staffing.

During the meeting, the board reviewed and voted on a series of resolutions, with most passing unanimously. However, Resolution 93 did not receive a motion and therefore did not pass. The meeting also included a public comment session, where community members voiced their concerns.

Sarah Junich, head of youth services at the Camden County Library System, addressed the board, expressing gratitude for the support from Commissioner Cooley Fleisher. She highlighted the library's vital programs, including literacy initiatives and tax preparation services, which have positively impacted the community. However, Junich raised alarms about potential funding cuts from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Department of Education, which could lead to a loss of $283,000 in funding for the library. She emphasized that such cuts would disproportionately affect marginalized communities.

Junich also discussed the staffing crisis within the library system, noting that low salaries for librarians are driving qualified candidates to seek employment elsewhere. She pointed out that the starting salary for a Librarian 1 is significantly below the recommended minimum, which could hinder the library's ability to provide essential services. The community is already feeling the effects, with some branches closing early due to staffing shortages.

The meeting underscored the importance of adequate funding and fair wages for library workers to maintain the quality of services provided to Camden County residents. The board's decisions and the community's response will be crucial in shaping the future of library services in the area.
