A new safety initiative is set to enhance emergency response protocols across McMinnville School District, thanks to the implementation of the SaferWatch notification system. During the November 25, 2024, school board meeting, officials outlined how this system will provide immediate communication with law enforcement during emergencies, including active assailant situations and severe medical incidents.

The district has secured funding of up to $2,000 per school to outfit each facility with the necessary software. This system allows for a direct alert to 911 without the need for a phone call, streamlining emergency responses. The plan includes four distinct emergency buttons: one for active assailants, one for severe medical emergencies, one for fire alerts, and a fourth button for other urgent situations.

Collaboration with local emergency services has been a key component of this initiative. The district has worked closely with the fire chief, sheriff's department, and McMinnville Police Department to ensure that when an alert is triggered, responders know exactly where to go and what resources to deploy. A standardized flowchart has been developed to ensure consistency in response across all schools in Yamhill County.

Training for school administrators is set to begin soon, with the system not going live until all staff are fully prepared to use it effectively. This proactive approach aims to ensure that in the event of a crisis, every second counts, and the right help is dispatched immediately.
