Chandler partners with ASU for 20-year vision project to ensure future growth

The Chandler City Council held a study session on June 9, 2025, focusing on strategic planning and community engagement for the future of the city. The primary agenda item was a proposed contract with Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business to conduct a comprehensive 20-year vision project. This initiative aims to address various challenges facing Chandler and provide actionable recommendations for sustainable growth.

Vice Mayor Ellis initiated the discussion by inquiring about the tangible applications of the forthcoming research. City staff emphasized the importance of allowing ASU to conduct an unbiased analysis, engaging with community members and business leaders to identify key areas for improvement. The goal is to ensure that the city’s planning efforts are informed by evidence-based research rather than preconceived notions.

Council members reflected on the success of previous studies, noting that recommendations from a similar project conducted two decades ago had significantly influenced Chandler’s development. Councilmember Orlando highlighted past recommendations, such as preserving key corridors and planning for affordable housing, which have proven beneficial over time. The council expressed optimism that the new study would yield similarly valuable insights.

The funding for this initiative was also discussed, with Councilmember Foster commending the creative use of IDA funding to support the project. City staff acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the budget team in securing the necessary resources.

In addition to the vision project, the council addressed the formation of a Citizens Charter Review Committee. Strategic Initiatives Director Ryan Peters outlined the timeline for the committee's work, which is set to begin in late July or early August. The committee will review the city charter and make recommendations for modernization, with the aim of presenting findings to the council by February 2026.
