Salina City Commission reviews alcohol permit for Santa Fe Showdown car show event

The Salina City Commission has taken a significant step towards enhancing community engagement by approving the Santa Fe Showdown, a popular annual event set for July 25. The event, organized by Calvin's Customs and Hot Rod Repairs, aims to bring together car enthusiasts and families for a day of fun, featuring car displays, music, and food trucks in the 300 block of North Santa Fe Avenue.

During the meeting, the commission discussed the necessity of an ordinance to authorize the possession and consumption of alcohol within the event's designated area. This approval is crucial for the event to proceed, as it allows for the issuance of a special event permit by the state. The commission was presented with several options, including the possibility of postponing the decision or making amendments to the event's details. Ultimately, the ordinance was approved, ensuring that the event can continue as planned.

Diane Schabowski, representing the event organizers, assured the commission that they would manage cleanup and security effectively. With a dedicated team of volunteers, they plan to maintain a clean environment and monitor for underage drinking, addressing any concerns raised by the commission. Last year, the event attracted over 1,300 attendees, and organizers anticipate similar or greater participation this year, promising an enjoyable atmosphere with live music from an eighties rock band.
