City of Carpinteria partners with Santa Barbara County for emergency alert system

The Carpinteria City Council convened on June 9, 2025, to discuss a significant advancement in emergency management: the authorization of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management. This agreement will facilitate the activation of the REDI SBC alert system and provide the city with access to the Genesis Evac Emergency Zone Mapping solution, a crucial tool for enhancing public safety during emergencies.

The Genesis Evac system is designed to improve coordination among various agencies during large-scale emergencies, such as wildfires, floods, and earthquakes. It offers real-time visual mapping that aids in decision-making and public information sharing, ensuring that residents receive timely updates on protective actions, including evacuation orders and shelter locations. This system will be utilized across all eight cities in Santa Barbara County, significantly improving the region's emergency response capabilities.

During the meeting, city officials highlighted the extensive collaboration that went into developing 534 emergency zones throughout the county, which includes critical facilities like hospitals and care centers. The new mapping system replaces an outdated model that primarily focused on wildfire threats, now adopting a comprehensive approach to various hazards.

Plans for a robust outreach campaign will include web pages, social media graphics, and public service announcements in both English and Spanish.
