Lancaster considers countywide social worker program for law enforcement collaboration

A key takeaway from the seminar was the potential implementation of social workers within law enforcement agencies across Lancaster County. Currently, Lancaster City employs two social workers who assist police officers during calls, particularly in situations that require mental health support. The borough's representatives noted that conversations are underway with county commissioners to explore expanding this model countywide. This initiative aims to ensure that social workers are available to accompany police officers on calls, providing crucial support in addressing mental health issues and community concerns.

The council members expressed optimism about the program's potential benefits, especially in light of the ongoing challenges related to gun violence and suicide prevention. While gun violence has seen a reduction this year compared to previous years, it remains a pressing issue for the community. The seminar attracted around 50 attendees from across Pennsylvania, highlighting the widespread interest in collaborative approaches to community safety.
