Community leaders launch South Side urban greenhouse initiative in Flagstaff

A groundbreaking urban greenhouse project is set to transform the South Side neighborhood of Flagstaff, aiming to empower marginalized communities through sustainable technology and education. The initiative, located near the Northern Arizona University campus, features an 8 by 12-foot automated greenhouse equipped with 13 vertical growing towers. This innovative design will enable year-round cultivation of food, providing at least 500 plants at once.

The project is not just about growing food; it’s about creating a vibrant community space that promotes equity and wellness. Local artists will contribute to the project by designing inclusive signage and murals, enhancing public engagement. The greenhouse will host open garden tours, community storytelling events, yoga sessions, and educational workshops on cooking and food preservation.

Half of the produce harvested will be distributed to local food access networks, while the other half will support nonprofit missions focused on sustainability. The initiative is organized by local volunteers and aims to foster community involvement, making it a hub for learning and collaboration.

The greenhouse is situated on a privately donated land plot, ensuring public accessibility. Plans are in place to clearly outline community access and event details online, including QR codes for easy information sharing.
