Portland Schools Celebrate Graduates and Announce New Student Opportunities

In a vibrant hybrid meeting held at Casco Bay High School, the Portland Board of Public Education convened on June 10, 2025, to discuss significant developments within the district. Chair Lentz took a moment to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2025, highlighting recent graduation ceremonies at Casco Bay High School and Portland High School. "These ceremonies were joyful experiences," Lentz remarked, expressing gratitude to the educators and families who supported the graduates. The board also recognized the successful "Make It Happen" ceremony, which celebrated educators in the Elevating Educators program, showcasing the community's investment in education.

A key topic of discussion was the ongoing community engagement regarding potential changes to the district's cell phone policy and school boundaries. Lentz noted the high attendance at community sessions, where diverse opinions were shared, contributing to a more informed decision-making process. "These conversations have landed us in a better place," Lentz stated, underscoring the importance of community feedback.

Student representative O'Brien provided insights into the Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS), reporting on the successful recruitment season and the school's growing student body. With 37% of students coming from Portland Public Schools, O'Brien highlighted the school's commitment to increasing female representation in its programs. The achievements of PATHS students were particularly noteworthy, with 466 industry-recognized certifications earned this year, including a 100% pass rate for the CNA certification in the biomedical program.

As the meeting drew to a close, Lentz encouraged community members to participate in local voting, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement. The board looks forward to welcoming a new member at its next meeting on June 17, before entering a recess in July.
