Smithville students excel in SkillsUSA welding and Kid Win design competitions

The Isle of Wight County Schools celebrated the achievements of its students during the recent School Board meeting on May 8, 2025, highlighting their impressive performances in various competitions.

A standout moment was the recognition of students from the IWCS welding program, who showcased their skills at the SkillsUSA competition. Team members Nathan McDonough, Gavin Howell, and Chris Barrett demonstrated exceptional teamwork and technical ability in team fabrication, while James Ferguson competed individually in welding. Their instructor, Paul Miller, praised their hard work and dedication, marking a significant achievement for the program.

In addition to welding, the meeting also spotlighted the Kid Wind Challenge, a hands-on design competition that encourages students to engage with STEM concepts through renewable energy projects. Smithville Middle School had an impressive showing, with six teams competing at the state level after performing well in the Eastern Virginia Regional Challenge. Notably, the Chill Guys team achieved a perfect score on the knowledge quiz, showcasing their understanding of wind energy.
