Nicholasville City Council approves utility budgets and hires for police department

The Nicholasville City Commission convened on June 9, 2025, to discuss several key ordinances and municipal orders that will shape the city’s budget and operations for the upcoming fiscal years. Among the most significant decisions was the approval of amendments to the city’s annual budget for both the utility and general government sectors, which are essential for maintaining city services and infrastructure.

The commission unanimously passed Ordinance 185-2025, amending the utility budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025. This amendment is crucial as it estimates revenues and appropriates funds necessary for the operation of city utilities. Similarly, Ordinance 186-2025 was adopted, establishing the utility budget for the following fiscal year, from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, ensuring continued utility services for residents.

Ordinance 188-2025 amended the budget for the current fiscal year, while Ordinance 189-2025 adopted the budget for the next fiscal year. Another noteworthy discussion involved the establishment of a regulatory license fee on the sale of alcoholic beverages, set at 5% of gross retail sales for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026. This fee is consistent with previous years and is expected to contribute to the city’s revenue.

The meeting also included updates to the city’s employee handbook, specifically regarding paid time off (PTO) policies. A municipal order was passed to clarify that employees who leave the city’s employment must repay any PTO used beyond what they have accrued, ensuring fair management of leave benefits.

In personnel matters, the commission approved several hires within the police department, including a temporary full-time officer and an intern, both aimed at enhancing community safety and support. Additionally, a request to hire a part-time tourism office manager was approved, reflecting the city’s commitment to promoting local tourism.
