Mecklenburg County approves Powercom's 250-foot communication tower for T Mobile

Mecklenburg County officials have approved a new telecommunications tower that promises to enhance cell service and internet connectivity in the area. During a recent meeting, the board unanimously supported the application for a 250-foot self-supporting tower, which will primarily serve T-Mobile but is designed to accommodate additional carriers in the future.

The project manager for GSS, representing the client Powercom, presented the proposal, highlighting that the tower's structure is capable of supporting up to four telecommunications carriers. This flexibility is part of the business model, allowing for future partnerships with other providers like Verizon and AT&T. The tower will be located approximately 1.2 miles from the nearest existing tower, ensuring improved service for residents.

In compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, the tower will feature a dual lighting system, flashing white during the day and red at night, to ensure visibility for aircraft. The board's approval included conditions that the applicant must meet before construction begins, such as submitting final construction drawings and obtaining necessary environmental assessments.

In addition to the telecommunications tower, the meeting also addressed a proposal from Antlers Road Solar LLC for a 90-megawatt solar energy facility. This project aims to utilize a portion of a larger agricultural property, furthering the county's commitment to renewable energy sources. The solar facility is expected to contribute to the local economy and provide sustainable energy options for residents.
