Laguna Beach Council discusses ADU design concerns and community impact

Laguna Beach City Council is grappling with the complexities of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) as discussions unfolded during the June 10, 2025, meeting. A significant focus was placed on a proposed ADU that has raised concerns regarding its design and impact on the surrounding community.

Council members and residents expressed apprehension over the proposed site plan, which some argued did not adequately consider zoning regulations, particularly setbacks and lot coverage. One resident highlighted that the design would exceed allowable lot coverage, potentially obstructing the enjoyment of outdoor space for neighbors. The resident emphasized that an ADU should be subordinate to the main house, but the current design would make the ADU the most prominent feature from the street.

Architect Steven Ronicki, involved in the project, defended the design, stating that the unique shape of the lot complicates construction. Ronicki urged council members to visit the site to better understand the challenges posed by the lot's geometry.

Glenn Butler, another architect, voiced support for ADUs as a means to address housing needs in the area. He acknowledged the pressures from state mandates regarding ADU regulations and argued that the focus should remain on public views rather than private views when considering coastal development permits.
