Council approves $170K playground grant request and $2M safe streets funding application

Hagerstown city officials are taking significant steps to enhance community infrastructure and safety following a recent council meeting. Among the key decisions made was the approval to seek a $170,000 grant for new playground equipment at Wheaton Park. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve local parks, aligning with the city’s master plan for recreational development.

The grant application is part of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Community Parks and Playground program, which is highly competitive, with approximately $5 million available for various projects. The city aims to replace outdated playground equipment, contributing to the ongoing enhancements at Wheaton Park, which also includes plans for a new stage.

In addition to park improvements, the council discussed a lease agreement with the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. The museum, which has utilized a different space for its annual auction for the past decade, will now use a retail space at the Elizabeth Heger Center at no cost from August to mid-November. This arrangement underscores the city’s commitment to supporting local cultural institutions.

Furthermore, the council is preparing to apply for a $2 million federal grant under the Safe Streets for All initiative. This funding aims to implement safety measures identified in the city’s recently adopted action plan, which seeks to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on local streets. The city has already allocated $500,000 in its fiscal year 2027 budget to match the federal funds, demonstrating a proactive approach to enhancing public safety.
