Oceanside Schools honor educators and top students in annual awards ceremony

The Oceanside Board of Education held its regular meeting on June 11, 2025, where several significant recognitions and achievements were celebrated. The meeting commenced with a commendation for Miss Diane Provido, an educator recognized for her unwavering commitment to student advocacy and family support in education. She received a medal for her contributions to the community.

Following this, Dr. Brendan Mitchell, principal of Oceanside High School, introduced student honorees who excelled in various scouting organizations. Liam Joseph Marino was acknowledged for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, having created a Hall of Heroes at his elementary school to honor military members, particularly Lieutenant Ronald Winchester. Additionally, Anne Marie Rivera and Katie Swanzig were recognized for earning the Gold Award in Girl Scouts for their impactful community projects.

The meeting continued with accolades in mathematics, presented by the director of mathematics, Tara Mauer. Students from Oceanside High School and Oceanside Middle School were honored for their achievements in the American Mathematics Competition, with several students placing in the top ranks. Notably, Henry Whitman was celebrated for memorizing 236 digits of pi, and Braden Hickey received the Silver Pin Award for being in the top 10% of mathletes worldwide.

Andrew Frey Gould, director of media, fine, and performing arts, announced that students in the media production program won a Telly Award for their Halloween-themed broadcast. The meeting also highlighted achievements in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition, with students receiving multiple awards.

Dr. David Rose, director of world languages, presented the accomplishments of students in national language exams, recognizing numerous winners in Italian, French, and Spanish categories. The meeting concluded with Thomas Leiben, director of physical education, health, and athletics, celebrating over 70 student-athletes who were recognized for their achievements during the athletic season.

Overall, the meeting showcased the dedication and accomplishments of students and educators within the Oceanside community, emphasizing the importance of academic and extracurricular excellence.
