Henry County board approves $505K air conditioning and $850K lighting upgrades

The Henry County Public Schools (HCPS) Board made significant strides in improving school facilities during their closeout meeting on June 12, 2025. A major highlight was the unanimous approval of a $505,000 contract for air conditioning installation in the gym at Axon Elementary, the last school in the district without this essential feature. Board members expressed enthusiasm for the upgrade, noting the importance of comfortable conditions for students and staff during events.

"This is wonderful that we are beginning to get air throughout the school," remarked a board member, reflecting on the long journey since the 1970s when air conditioning was virtually nonexistent in schools. With this installation, all K-12 schools in the district will have air-conditioned gyms, marking a significant milestone in enhancing the learning environment.

In addition to the air conditioning project, the board also approved an $850,000 contract for lighting upgrades across various schools. This initiative is part of HCPS's strategic plan to create a safe and supportive learning environment while reducing energy costs. The upgrades will include new LED fixtures for parking lots and classrooms at multiple schools, ensuring better visibility and safety for students and staff.
