City officials complete Merritt Road landfill capping amid ongoing construction projects

The Marietta City Council held a productive agenda review session on June 11, 2025, highlighting several key projects and initiatives that promise to enhance community services and infrastructure.

One of the most significant updates was the completion of the Merritt Road landfill capping project. Officials reported that the site has been stabilized and is now flat and level, improving drainage and aesthetics. In a positive turn for environmental initiatives, the city has advanced in its application for a federal recycling grant. If awarded, the grant could provide $1 million to improve the recycling program, including the introduction of roll carts. This funding aims to address current gaps in the recycling system and enhance overall efficiency.

The meeting concluded with discussions on building permits and inspections, revealing that the city issued 6,000 permits last year, resulting in approximately 12,000 inspections. This figure includes various types of permits, indicating a diverse range of construction activities within the city.

As summer activities ramp up, Parks and Recreation Director Rich Buss reported that summer camps are in full swing, offering a variety of programs, including STEM and magic camps, to engage local youth.
