San Antonio declares Juneteenth a city holiday with community celebrations planned

San Antonio will officially recognize June 19, 2025, as Juneteenth Day, following a proclamation by Mayor Ron Nuremberg during the City Council meeting on June 12, 2025. This declaration aligns with the nationwide observance of Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and the ongoing fight for equality and justice.

The proclamation highlights the historical significance of Juneteenth, marking the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued two and a half years earlier. The observance serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by the African American community and the need for continued advocacy for freedom and equality.

To celebrate this important day, the San Antonio Juneteenth Freedom Coalition will host the Juneteenth Independence Day Parade on June 14, 2025, followed by a festival at Comanche Park Number 2. The festival will feature food booths, musical entertainment, and activities for families, fostering community engagement and celebration.

Council member Mickey Rodriguez emphasized the importance of Juneteenth as not only a historical milestone but also a call to action against systemic racism. He urged the community to reflect on the ongoing legacy of oppression and to work together to create meaningful change. Rodriguez pointed out that while San Antonio has made strides, such as passing a non-discrimination ordinance and recognizing racism as a public health crisis, more action is needed to address the deep-rooted issues that persist.

Community leaders, including Reginald Orr from the Juneteenth Freedom Coalition, echoed these sentiments, encouraging residents to embrace the values of equality and unity in their daily lives. They stressed that the fight for justice is ongoing and requires collective effort from all members of the community.

As San Antonio prepares for the upcoming celebrations, the city remains committed to honoring its history while actively working towards a more equitable future for all its residents.
