WUSD announces free summer meals and plans Juneteenth celebration

The Washington Unified School District (WUSD) is gearing up for a busy summer, with plans to complete various facility projects ahead of the new school year starting August 6. During the Regular Board of Education Meeting on June 12, 2025, Superintendent Brooke highlighted the district's commitment to ensuring a smooth transition back to school after a short summer break.

In addition to facility preparations, WUSD will offer free summer meals for all children aged 18 and under from June 16 to July 18, available Monday through Friday at two locations: Bridal Campus and Bridgeway Boathouse. This initiative aims to support families during the summer months.

The meeting also marked June as National Gun Violence Awareness Month, with discussions emphasizing the importance of fostering safe environments for students and families. The board reiterated its commitment to responsible firearm ownership and safe storage practices, following a resolution adopted earlier this year.

Furthermore, the district is celebrating Pride Month, honoring the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community and promoting inclusivity within schools. Superintendent Brooke stressed the importance of acceptance and understanding, encouraging educational efforts to challenge stereotypes.

Looking ahead, the district is set to partner with the city for a Juneteenth celebration on June 19, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The event will feature activities, food trucks, and community engagement, reinforcing WUSD's dedication to justice and equality.

Trustee Wong expressed gratitude for the recent graduation ceremonies, highlighting the joy of witnessing students' achievements and the community's support. The board also discussed upcoming budget amendments and the need for additional school buses to enhance student transportation.
