Brooke Gullo named April Athlete of the Month at Center Ridge High School

In a vibrant celebration of student achievement, the Middle Country Central School District held its Board of Education meeting on June 11, 2025, where several outstanding student-athletes were recognized for their exceptional contributions both on and off the field. The atmosphere was filled with pride as coaches and board members took turns honoring these remarkable individuals.

Brooke Gullo, a senior from Center Reach High School, was named the April Female Athlete of the Month. Coach Corel praised her leadership as team captain of the varsity softball team, highlighting her impressive batting average of over .500 and her defensive prowess in center field. Gullo's accolades extend beyond athletics; she ranks in the top 25 of her graduating class and is an active member of multiple honor societies and student council. Coach Corel emphasized her character, stating, "Brooke is the definition of a successful student-athlete," and noted her commitment to uplifting her teammates.

The May Male Athlete of the Month award went to Michael Bonajero, also from Center Reach, who was recognized for his quiet yet impactful leadership on the baseball team. Coach Kamarada commended Bonajero's dedication and competitive spirit, stating that he sets a high standard for his peers.

From Newfield High School, Ashley Hernandez was honored as the Female Athlete of the Month for her resilience and commitment to her softball team. Despite stepping into the role of starting pitcher after the loss of several key players, Hernandez maintained a strong batting average and demonstrated exceptional support for her teammates. Coach Catapano's absence was felt, but her words conveyed the importance of Hernandez's contributions.

AJ Sullivan, the Male Athlete of the Month from Newfield's boys lacrosse team, was recognized for his defensive skills and leadership. Coach Magat McAtee highlighted Sullivan's ability to inspire his teammates through his relentless effort and competitive nature.

The meeting also celebrated the achievements of students beyond athletics. Reagan Atanese, a New Lane grade student, received recognition for qualifying for the National Junior Olympic Luge Team, showcasing the diverse talents within the district. Additionally, students Matthew Bides and Julia Carter were acknowledged for their advancement in the Long Island Science Congress, with an award ceremony set for June 13.

As the meeting concluded, the board expressed gratitude for the hard work and dedication of all the students, leaving attendees inspired by the accomplishments and character of these young leaders.
