Long Beach officials promote Strong Beach Initiative on National Gun Violence Awareness Day

The Long Beach City Council meeting on June 13, 2025, marked National Gun Violence Awareness Day, also known as Wear Orange Day. Mayor Rex Richardson opened the event by emphasizing the importance of community awareness and education in addressing gun violence. He acknowledged the presence of first responders, including firefighters, police officers, and nurses, who play a crucial role in community safety.

Mayor Richardson highlighted the alarming trend of increased youth violence during summer months, particularly affecting communities of color and low-income neighborhoods. He reiterated the city’s commitment to creating safe environments for youth through initiatives like the Strong Beach Initiative, which aims to provide opportunities and resources to prevent violence. Since its launch, the initiative has reportedly led to a 27.3% reduction in homicides and a 14.5% decrease in overall crime in Long Beach.

Continuing the momentum, the city plans to expand youth opportunities and implement data-driven violence prevention measures. The mayor announced the continuation of funding for neighborhood block parties, which promote positive social interactions, and the kickoff of a summer youth jobs initiative aimed at hiring 750 to 800 young people.

Councilwoman Cindy Allen also spoke at the event, expressing gratitude to community partners and emphasizing the need for collective action against gun violence. She noted that the day serves as a reminder of the personal impact of gun violence on families and communities, urging attendees to reaffirm their commitment to prevention and healing.

The meeting concluded with a call for unity and ongoing collaboration to ensure a safe and vibrant summer for all Long Beach residents.
