University of Northern Iowa celebrates record 30 doctorate graduates and student leaders

The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) celebrated a remarkable milestone during its recent graduation ceremony, marking the largest cohort of Doctorate of Education graduates in its history with 30 students receiving their degrees. This achievement highlights UNI's commitment to providing quality education and fostering international connections, as evidenced by the presence of six international students who traveled from Shanghai to participate in the ceremony.

The event showcased not only academic accomplishments but also the inspiring stories of individuals who have made significant contributions to the UNI community. Among them was Pat Lyons, a local leader and CEO of Ideal Industries, who returned to complete his master's degree in psychology. His journey reflects the university's dedication to lifelong learning and the support it offers to its alumni.

Another standout was Marvin Carr, a Navy veteran recognized for his service and leadership on campus. Carr has become a beloved figure at UNI, helping fellow students navigate their academic and personal journeys. His recent accolade as one of the state's heroes for service underscores the impact he has made within the community.

Giselle Herrera, who earned her Master's in Social Work, exemplified student leadership and engagement. Active in various organizations, she now serves as an admissions counselor, helping to recruit future students while continuing her education.

The ceremony also honored exceptional student leaders with the Luxe Service Awards, the highest recognition for graduating students at UNI. Notable recipients included Elizabeth Montalvo, a former student body president dedicated to supporting her peers, and Delaney Nagle, a triple major who has actively uplifted fellow students through her leadership roles.
