The Metuchen Board of Education meeting on June 11, 2025, highlighted the achievements of local students through the presentation of the New Jersey State Seal of Biliteracy. Miss Ashley Jay, the supervisor of world languages, announced that 34 students from Metuchen High School earned this prestigious award, recognizing their proficiency in multiple languages including Chinese, French, German, Marathi, Korean, Polish, Russian, Telugu, Hindi, and Spanish.
The New Jersey State Seal of Biliteracy is awarded to high school graduates who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, listening, and writing in one or more world languages, in addition to English. To qualify, students must meet the graduation requirements for English language arts and achieve a proficiency level of intermediate mid or higher on a state-approved world language assessment. Notably, some students also earned the Global Seal of Biliteracy.

Subscribe for Free During the meeting, certificates were presented to the students in attendance, with seniors and juniors recognized for their accomplishments. Seniors who received the award included Oliver Atkins, Daniel Ayala, and Jaden Ladondo, among others. Juniors, who will graduate with the seal next year, included Bilal Badrinov and Aidan Bernstein Lundy.
Miss Jay explained the testing process for the Seal of Biliteracy, which begins with an interest meeting for juniors and seniors. Students are provided with resources and testing occurs over a two-week period in January, accommodating their busy schedules. The tests are available to all students, regardless of their enrollment in a world language course.
The meeting also included a segment celebrating the achievements of local sports teams and individuals who won championships during the spring season, further showcasing the talents and successes of Metuchen students. The Board expressed gratitude for the opportunity to honor these accomplishments, emphasizing the importance of recognizing student achievements in both academics and athletics.
