In a recent special meeting of the Colorado Springs School District No. 11 Board of Education, community engagement and support for charter schools emerged as key topics of discussion. Mary Anne, the chair of the District Accountability Committee (DAC), opened the session by emphasizing the value of community input and the efforts made over the past year to strengthen connections with parents and local schools. DAC representatives visited over 30 schools, fostering relationships and gathering feedback to enhance student achievement. “We thrive to welcome all voices and create understanding with curiosity and an open mind,” she stated, highlighting the committee's commitment to prioritizing student needs.

The DAC's report outlined several accomplishments, including the successful implementation of site-based budgeting and improved collaboration with school advisory committees (SACs). The budget subcommittee expressed a desire to continue supporting the district's financial planning and to engage with SACs to ensure effective input into budgeting processes.

Board members praised the DAC's outreach efforts, particularly the training provided to SACs, which has been instrumental in enhancing community involvement in school improvement plans. One board member noted the importance of early parent training related to Individual Career and Academic Plans (ICAP), suggesting that expanding these efforts to middle schools could further engage families in their children's education.

As discussions progressed, the board sought guidance on how to better support charter schools within the district's improvement plan. The DAC expressed a commitment to elevating charter school feedback and ensuring their inclusion in the district's strategic initiatives.
