Kansas Bureau of Investigation targets illegal offenders in 48,000 registry list

Kansas is taking significant steps to enhance public safety through a new initiative aimed at identifying undocumented individuals on the state's sex offender registry. During a recent meeting of the Senate Committee on Government Efficiency, officials from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) outlined their plan to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to review the list of approximately 48,000 registered offenders. The goal is to determine how many of these individuals are in the country illegally, with the intention of detaining and deporting those found to be undocumented.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the KBI to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of criminal justice services across the state. The KBI also highlighted the importance of the Kansas Criminal Justice Information System (KCIS), which supports law enforcement agencies by providing critical data during traffic stops and other interactions. The system processes around 115,000 inquiries daily, ensuring officers have access to vital information in real-time.

In addition to these efforts, the KBI is working on upgrading its laboratory information management system to allow victims of sexual assault to track the progress of their evidence kits. This upgrade aims to enhance transparency and accountability within the criminal justice system, providing victims with a clearer understanding of their cases.

The meeting also addressed the need for improved tools for tracking registered offenders. KBI officials acknowledged that the current system, which has been in place for over a decade, does not meet the needs of local sheriffs. They are exploring options for a third-party platform to better support law enforcement in monitoring offenders in their communities.
