Houston honors veterans Bertha Strait Lee and Patricia Rankin for military service

On June 13, 2025, Houston celebrated Texas Women Veterans Day, honoring the contributions and sacrifices of women veterans in the community. The event highlighted the remarkable stories of several women who served in the military, showcasing their dedication and resilience.

Among those recognized was Bertha Strait Lee, who joined the Army in 1951. After completing her training, she served in various capacities, including working in a hospital kitchen. Following her five years of service, Bertha returned to Houston, where she became a principal secretary and later pursued a career in beauty, establishing a successful hair care business. In recognition of her centennial birthday, Mayor John Whitmire proclaimed January 18, 2025, as Bertha Strait Lee Day.

The ceremony also honored Patricia Rankin, an 84-year-old veteran who joined the Army during the Vietnam War era. After her service, she earned a nursing degree and became a CPR instructor, contributing to her community through education and healthcare.

Judy Hartwell, who served in the Air Force from 1971 to 1973, was recognized for her role in supporting military families during the Vietnam War. Her commitment to service continued in education, where she made a lasting impact as a teacher and principal.

Another honoree, Judy Hurst Hierce, had a distinguished career in the Marine Corps, serving in various leadership roles and participating in significant operations, including Desert Shield and Iraqi Freedom. Her legacy includes mentoring new Marines and continuing to support the Corps after retirement.

The event emphasized the importance of recognizing women veterans, many of whom faced unique challenges during their service. The speakers highlighted the need to acknowledge their contributions and ensure that their stories are told and celebrated.
