The Wausau Infrastructure and Facilities Committee convened on June 12, 2025, to discuss critical improvements to the city’s infrastructure, particularly focusing on roadway safety and accessibility. The meeting highlighted plans for enhanced lighting and sidewalk extensions, which are expected to significantly benefit both pedestrians and cyclists in the area.
One of the primary topics was the proposal for a continuous lighting system along the roadway from Sixth to Eighteenth Street. Currently, there are gaps in lighting that create safety concerns, particularly for cyclists and pedestrians. The committee discussed the advantages of a uniform lighting system, which would eliminate dark areas and improve visibility. The estimated cost for this project is approximately $357,500, with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) agreeing to cover half of the expenses. This financial partnership presents a valuable opportunity for the city to enhance safety without bearing the full cost.
In addition to lighting, the committee also considered the extension of sidewalks on the north side of the street, which currently lacks a continuous pathway from Thirteenth to Eighteenth Street. The proposed sidewalk extension would facilitate safer travel for students and residents, allowing them to walk without needing to cross the street. The estimated cost for this project is $19,500, with the state covering 80% of the expenses.
Committee members expressed strong support for both initiatives, recognizing their potential to improve safety for all road users. The discussions underscored the importance of these infrastructure enhancements in promoting a safer environment for biking and walking, particularly in light of recent safety reports concerning school routes.
The committee unanimously approved moving forward with the lighting proposal and sidewalk extension, with plans to present these recommendations to the city council in July. The anticipated improvements reflect a proactive approach to urban planning, aiming to address community needs while fostering a safer and more accessible environment for all residents.
