Central School District celebrates retirements and board service acknowledgments

The Central School District 13J held a heartfelt meeting on June 10, 2025, to honor retiring staff members and recognize outgoing board members, marking a significant moment for the community of Independence, Oregon.

During the meeting, three dedicated educators were celebrated for their long-standing commitment to the district. Brad Berry, who taught science at Tallmadge Middle School for 21 years, was recognized for his hands-on approach to teaching and his impact on students. Claudette Garcia, with an impressive 30 years at Independence Elementary, was acknowledged for her extensive experience, primarily in kindergarten. Lastly, Brett Baldwin, who has served in various roles including assistant principal and athletic director at Central High School, was also honored for his 30 years of service.

Superintendent expressed gratitude for their contributions, emphasizing the lasting influence these educators have had on students and the community. He encouraged them to remain involved, suggesting they consider substitute teaching in the future.

In addition to honoring retiring staff, the meeting also recognized two outgoing board members, Don Wall and Peggy Klein. Wall served for 12 years, while Klein contributed for 10 years. Their leadership was credited with significant advancements in the district, including the establishment of a two-way immersion program at Independence Elementary and the approval of new curriculum initiatives. The superintendent thanked them for their dedication and commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment.

This meeting not only celebrated individual achievements but also highlighted the ongoing commitment of the Central School District to support its students and community. As the school year comes to a close, the district looks forward to building on these foundations for future success.
