During the recent Pompton Lakes Council meeting, local resident Alex Diaz presented an ambitious Eagle Scout project aimed at enhancing community engagement with nature. Diaz proposed the construction of two informational kiosks at popular trail entrances in Pompton Lakes, designed to educate visitors about local wildlife and the environment.
The kiosks will be strategically placed at the beginning of trails on Lincoln Avenue and Mathis Avenue, providing essential information for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Diaz emphasized the importance of these kiosks in fostering a connection between residents and the natural beauty of their surroundings. He noted that the kiosks would not only serve as guides for trail users but also include educational content about invasive and endangered species in the area.
The project is set to be a collaborative effort, involving members of Troop 388, adult leaders, and volunteers. Diaz has already conducted measurements and consulted with the Pompton Lakes Trail Maintenance Committee to ensure the kiosks meet local standards. He acknowledged the potential challenges posed by the floodplain locations but confirmed that construction would comply with state regulations allowing for below-grade structures.
To fund the project, Diaz plans to reach out to local businesses, family, and friends for donations, estimating a total cost of approximately $1,621 for both kiosks. This budget includes materials such as lumber, roofing, and concrete, as well as provisions for volunteers during the assembly process.
The council expressed support for Diaz's initiative, recognizing its potential to enrich the community's outdoor experience. As the project moves forward, it promises to not only beautify the trails but also educate residents and visitors about the local ecosystem, fostering a greater appreciation for Pompton Lakes' natural resources.
